ICHS 150th Anniversary Celebrations – 2008

Seven months to go!  Time is flying and we’re having lots of fun.  The excitement is growing, our team is expanding and in the coming weeks, our celebrations will become official.  We are particularly proud of our alumnae, who have jumped on board and are assisting with the planning of our year-long celebration.

Where are we now?  Well, our Logo and Theme competition at the High School closed on April 17 and of the seventeen entries submitted, three were selected for incorporation in the final draft of the 150th theme and logo.  The announcement of the top three entries, presentation of awards and the unveiling of the logo and theme to the school, will take place on Monday, May 7, 2007 during Assembly.  Our sincere thanks to Chief Judge Michelle Welsh (nee DaCosta - Class of 1977) and Mrs. Adugo Onura (Drama Teacher) for their time and guidance in the process.

A similar competition was launched at the Preparatory School on Wednesday, April 18, 2007.  Thanks to Mrs. Jennifer Reid (Art Department Head) and Ms Mendes (Principal) for taking on this task with lots of enthusiasm.  On Thursday, May 17, 2007, the winning entry will be announced, prize awarded and theme and logo unveiled.  During the official launch of the 150th celebration, both logos will be officially unveiled and let me add here that there will be a copyright on the logos, which will become the property of IC Preparatory and High School.

During April, our Florida Chapter was well represented in Jamaica with the visit of President Jennifer Williams-Hoyes.  Both Janine and I enjoyed a wonderful day with Jennifer, who had our girls in ‘stitches’ during her motivational five-minutes presentation at Assembly.  A tour of the school was also conducted.  Jennifer also had the opportunity to sit in on the deliberations of the judges for the Logo and Theme Competition.  At this time I must convey our thanks to the Florida Chapter for providing us with the second prize – another I-pod.  Also, Thanks Ladies for hosting the undersigned during my recent visit to South Florida.  We had an enjoyable and fun-filled afternoon, discussing the establishment of the ICHS Alumnae website….more to come on that shortly!  Another big THANK YOU to our New York Chapter for providing us with the 1st prize for the Preparatory School Logo competition.  President Karlene (Samuel) Largie has been so supportive of the effort.

Where are we now?  Well our Home and School Association (HASA) is on board with two activities – St Patrick’s Day Supper (in March) and St. Francis Walkathon (in October).  President Eric Hosin and his team are now in the process of organizing those two events.  From an organizational standpoint, at this time, we are concentrating on sponsors and they are rolling in.  Already, Air Jamaica has given their undertaking and we are currently having discussions with other major benefactors.  The offers are numerous and we are very encouraged by the interest and participation of our IC family.

The finalized schedule of activities will be announced and circulated within the next few weeks.  Our celebrations will begin on January 13, 2007 with the Anniversary Mass at the Holy Trinity Cathedral beginning at 8:30 a.m.  A grand Anniversary Brunch will follow Mass and the venue is the St. George’s College Auditorium.   February’s event is one in which many students have expressed an interest, and that is the inaugural ICHS Alumnae Lecture Series, where our own Professor Yolande Chan (nee Brown), of Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, will be the presenter.  Thanks again to the Toronto Chapter for facilitating this contact.  In March, memories of St. Patrick’s Day Supper will be staged by HASA, an event which I am sure will be of significance to us.

Our Marketing and Communications teams are working hard to make the IC 150th Anniversary, the greatest show of 2008 in Jamaica and they could do with some more hands and minds.  I encourage the entire IC Family to get involved so that our School’s exemplary contribution to education in Jamaica will be showcased for all Jamaica to see.

See you next month, when there will be more to tell you.  God Bless!
