Festive activities. Reminiscing with former teachers and classmates. It was a joyful privilege to partake in the celebrations to honor the rich tradition of our alma mater.

The Summer House renovation ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, the beautiful Liturgy of the Eucharist at Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Brunch, following Mass on Sunday, were among the highlights.

Several Florida Chapter board members attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Summer House renovation, which was well attended. The Florida Chapter Capital Campaign, and 2007 fundraising efforts, provided the funds for the completion of Phase 1 of the Summer House renovation - the roof and ceiling of the building.

Sister Eleanor and Sister Margaret travelled from Glasgow, Scotland to be on hand.

Sister Avril Chin Fatt, Sister Maureen Clare, Sister Angella Harris and Yasmin Chong all addressed the gathering. On behalf of our Florida chapter, I renewed our commitment to raising funds for Phase 2 of the Summer House renovation - the floor, walls and changing rooms.

We are grateful for the blessed stubbornness of Mother Veronica, and the Sisters from Glasgow, who traveled to Kingston one hundred and fifty years ago to start the Immaculate Conception Academy.  The Academy has done the Sisters proud, educating over 20,000 young women, some of the most accomplished citizens in Jamaica, and every corner of the world.

There is an overwhelming sense of nostalgia as you visit the school. Welcome back to where we built our future...

It is amazing so much seems the same - the buildings, the facilities, some of the same equipment, worn but still in use, the order, the decorum, the crisp uniforms.

Outstanding achievements:

  • 95% passed the CSEC exam

  • highest math exam pass in the Island

  • All-Island Spelling Bee champion

  • champions of music, essay writing, all types of sports, tennis, swimming, track and field.

What a pleasure to talk with the students, the smiling, hopeful faces of the 'phenomenal women of tomorrow.' We must invest in the future. We must maintain our great school. It has withstood the test of time! But the future begins today!

Current government support provides for teacher salaries only, so the School must rely on the benevolence of the Church, parents, alumnae and friends to cover operating expenses and to fund expansion.

How does Sister Angella achieve such a successful outcome with such limited resources?

There must be "divine" intervention!

Your generous support of the ICHS 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign will ensure the funds needed to

  • complete the Summer House renovations,

  • upgrade current facilities

  • build much needed classrooms to accommodate the growing student body

Let us rekindle our School spirit during this milestone year. Your gift of any amount will make a difference. Together we will achieve our goal.

Honor the past - the qualities we learned at our beloved alma mater that have remained constant:

  • commitment to excellence

  • concern for others

  • regard for the community with our commitment to the future.

Jennifer Williams Hoyes
