History

The ICHS Alumnae Association of Fl had its origins in a group of ‘girls’ who  migrated with their families, from  Jamaica, to areas of South Miami in Florida.  These women found that they shared the same values and interests which had grown out of the solid foundation so deeply engrained by the ICHS experience.

Over the years the Association has proven to be a magnet for a diverse cast of women who generously and enthusiastically share their resources and experience with those who are currently pursuing the ICHS dream.

In 1989 the first president, the late Marva (Robinson) Lasoff, was elected to office.  Despite Marva’s untimely passing, in continuation of her hard work and dedication, the remaining members of this small group filed the Articles of Incorporation with the State of Florida on July 16th 1990.

The Florida chapter of the Alumnae Association has grown to encompass several hundred ‘girls’ living in all corners of this southernmost State and has retained the membership of countless others who have since moved back ‘home’ or to other parts of the globe.

Over the years, we have enjoyed several social and business gatherings as well as hosted numerous successful fundraising events.  We have also collaborated with other alumnae associations to help a cross section of high school students in Jamaica.

On a personal level, we have watched one another’s families grow up and laughed and cried as we shared many milestones.

Throughout it’s  existence, the Association has always maintained close ties with the School through visits by individual members and through constant communication with the principal and faculty of the school  Some of the practical and tangible support for our Alma Mater which has been at the core of our endeavour  are: Contributions toward school Buses; University/College and In-house Scholarships; Personal Computers;  Post hurricane roof and building repairs and Audio-Visual equipment.  The Florida chapter has also hosted the ICHS Track and Field team on several occasions when they have competed in Meets in Miami.  The Fine Arts Building and the Music Program have also benefited from our support.

We have never forgotten the Franciscan Nuns who dedicated their lives to our success and we continue to contribute to the everyday and retirement  needs of those still in residence at the Convent.

During its 18 year history, the Florida Chapter has been served by the following Presidents:

  • 1989 – 1990     Marva (Robinson) Lasoff ,  deceased

As originally challenged by Archbishop Samuel Carter at the Chapter’s inaugural mass in 1991, our members will  “not slip into spiritual amnesia and to resist the temptation to forget our spiritual heritage and national and cultural identities…to perpetuate the fine legacy of excellence which is enshrined in the school’s motto Ad Astra Per Aspera. “
