ICHS Alumnae Association Bulletin #52

November 2007

Message from the “Editor”

The website at www.ichsalumnae.net  is still actively under development, and information is being added at regular intervals.  Please take some time to visit and send us your feedback.

Thanks to all who have been sending updated contact information – this helps to reduce the amount of mail that is returned each month.  We look forward to hearing from more of you – please send your detailed contact information and any updates if you have relocated.

Please forward this bulletin to as many past students as possible and encourage them to join the mailing list.  With the 150th Anniversary next year, we need to get in touch with as many past students as possible.  To be added to the mailing list, send a message to ichsalumnae@hotmail.com with name (maiden also), year of graduation, and present location.

150th Anniversary Committee Report

The IC Phenomenal Women of Yesterday and Today are floating on cloud nine.  October 23, 2007 was a day to remember when the 150th Anniversary Celebrations were launched and a celebration indeed.  Our students were perfect ICHS ladies, our teachers were present, our Alumnae were there in full support and a good time was had by all.  Our special guests included the Minister of Education, Hon. Andrew Holness, Mr. Michael Lee Chin, NCB Group Chairman, Mrs. Maxine Henry-Wilson, Opposition Spokeswoman on Education and Mrs. Thalia Lyn, NCB Foundation Chairman and alumna.  The NCB Foundation announced their contribution of JA$2 million to fund the construction of the Dean of Discipline’s office, a priority of the 150th Anniversary Development Fund.   The capital campaign was also launched and the Planning Committee now has the pledge letters available for any alumnae who wish to help us raise funds for the development of our alma mater.

So where are we now?

Preparations are in high gear for the Mass, which will take place on January 13, 2008 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The ICHS Orchestra will perform throughout the Mass and there will be a special guest appearance by our accomplished opera singer, Candice Hoyes, daughter of Jennifer Hoyes, the Florida Chapter’s President. The finishing touches for the Brunch are being put in place.  A tasteful menu and a wonderful entertainment package are in store for all.  Tickets are now available and may be purchased from the Preparatory School, High School and Alumnae Assoc. members at a cost of J$1000.00 per person.  I would like to encourage all alumnae to confirm their attendance at these two events by e-mail at ichs15008@yahoo.com.  Additionally, the commemorative magazine will be available as of January 7, 2008. Only 1000 copies will be printed and I urge you to pre-order your copy, again by e-mail at ichs15008@yahoo.com.

February 2008 is shaping up to be a “sold-out” event, generating feverish interest in the intellectual community. Professor Yolande Chan will deliver a presentation - “Equipping tomorrow’s leaders through value-based, technology-driven education” - which will provide insight and guidance for students, teachers and policymakers alike, using “live” technology during her appearance. The venue is the palatial Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston and again, you are encouraged to confirm your attendance early. Invitations will be distributed as of January 10, 2008. In March, ‘the ole-time something come back again’ as we re-live a St. Patrick’s Day Supper.

The ICHSAA website – www.ichsalumnae.net – continues to be the repository for the most current information on the 150th Anniversary Celebrations.  Look out for the new format……coming shortly! There is no stopping us now as the excitement grows and you, our ICHS phenomenal women have got to get involved!!!!!!

See you later!  God Bless!

Chairperson

Update from Membership

In an attempt to contact everyone who passed through the Prep School and High School, we will be having a membership drive... so stay tuned !!!

In order to ensure maximum participation in the 150th Anniversary Celebrations, we are trying to identify an ambassador for each year. The responsibilities are:

1.  Reaching out to the individuals in your year.

2.  Communicating any concerns and suggestions back to the alumnae.

3.  Welcoming/Registering alumnae at each of the events next year

4.  Ensuring that everyone is updated on all events and initiatives.

5.  Engage other enthusiastic individuals (here and abroad) in her graduating class to support her.

Please nominate someone or volunteer to represent your year. It is preferable that the ambassador lives in Jamaica so that they can be physically present at all the events.  Please forward your nomination to lisaannefoster@yahoo.com

Any other ideas that you have that will help to get all past students on our mailing list will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Florida Chapter

The Florida Chapter held our major fund-raiser, the Bingo/Dominoes Night on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Miami as well as the 50/50 Raffle Tickets drawing. We had a most enjoyable evening with great prizes for Bingo, fun bidding in the Silent Auction, playing for Chinese Auction prizes and of course, the delicious food and desserts.

We are grateful to our sponsors and alumnae for their donations – cash, plants, food, artwork and prizes. Combined with the Raffle, this was our most successful fund-raiser in years. Thanks to Lara Dyke, Chairperson for this event, as well as her Committee Chairs and volunteers for all their hard work! We also have to thank all the alumna that sold tickets and/or attended the event – all of which contributed to a most successful fund-raiser!

Consul General Ricardo Allicock drew the winning tickets of the Raffle. The 1st prize winner, Mrs. DeCambre, is an alumna’s mother and the 2nd prize winner, C. Sailsman is an alumna. Neither were present at the event. However, at our meeting on October 20, both winners were presented with their respective prizes by Jennifer Hoyes, our President. Congratulations to the winners!

We held our quarterly meeting at Nancy Cera’s house on Saturday, October 20. The Treasurer gave us her report and coupled with capital donations by 3 alumna, the Florida Chapter will be able to donate $15,000 towards the Summer House renovations. We understand that this will be sufficient to start Phase I. Sister Angella Harris has indicated that there will be a ground-breaking ceremony on January 12, 2008.

We are now encouraging our alumnae to attend the 150th Anniversary events starting with the Mass on January 13, 2008.

We are now looking forward to meeting Sister Angella Harris on November 11, 2007 for tea.
