Yolande Chan arrived at her alma mater on Sunday, February 10, 2008 to begin a week-long schedule of activities to mark the launch of the ICHS Distinguished Lecture Series. On Monday morning, Professor Chan was given a rousing welcome by the faculty, staff and students at Assembly, where she called on the students to properly prepare themselves for the world of work and to cherish the valuable experience of being part of the ICHS family. She then met with the teaching staff and discussed the importance of using technology to impart knowledge to students and to make learning more relevant to their students. She was also interviewed on morning radio by two talk shows. A tour of the school followed and the excitement heightened as Professor Chan visited various classes (in session) and went on to spend some time in the three computer labs, talking with students and teachers.

On Monday afternoon, Professor Chan paid a courtesy call on the Governor General, the Most Honourable Sir Kenneth Hall and Lady Hall. A cordial and informative discussion was enjoyed especially when Sir Kenneth revealed that he was a Queen’s graduate.

The big day arrived and an enjoyable, interesting and interactive evening was had by the audience as Professor Chan presented "Equipping tomorrow’s leaders, through value-based, technology-enabled education". Professor Chan’s presentation outlined the importance of vision, values and pedagogical purpose as she presented information technology tools used to enhance teaching and learning. She described technologies used innovatively by several schools and universities. These include open source tools, commercial course management systems, wireless devices, video/web conferencing, blogs, podcasts and social networking tools. She emphasized that technology, while important, should be viewed simply as a means to the end—our educational goals. The occasion also marked the launch of the ICHS Distinguished Lecture Series, which will become an annual event on the Alumnae calendar.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding received Professor Chan for a courtesy call on Wednesday morning. He congratulated ICHS on 150 years of exemplary service to education and encouraged Professor Chan and all alumnae to continue serving such a noble institution.

ICHS’ IT Development Plan then took centre stage and Professor Chan shared her expertise with Sr. Angella Harris and the IT Development Team, which includes teachers, administrators, students and parents. A television interview on a popular programme – PROFILE – brought Professor Chan’s week-long schedule to a fitting end. The programme was aired on TVJ on March 2, 2008.

The 150th Anniversary Planning Committee would like to thank all our sponsors and in particular Air Jamaica, First Caribbean International Bank, Mr. Carl Chang and Paymaster Jamaica Limited.

This was the second event in the year-long series of activities which marks the 150th anniversary of Immaculate Conception High and Prep Schools. The celebratory year opened on January 13, 2008 with a Mass and Brunch at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
